Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 and SmartPass 4.1.2:

Applies to: SmartPass 4.1.2 April build
Last updated: November 9th, 2001.

SUMMARY

Recovering from installing the April build of SmartPass 4.1.2 and Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000.

SYMPTOMS

Installing the April build of SmartPass 4.1.2 (no longer available) and Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 on the same computer will cause Windows to fail to start. After logging in, explorer.exe hangs, and the desktop is never loaded. Attempting to use task manager to kill the explorer process and start a new one can result in hard lockups or crashes.

NOTE: This build of 4.1.2 is no longer available. The build dated 5/21/01 and all subsequent releases have been tested and are compatible with Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

REPAIR

NOTE: The repair process requires use of the Windows 2000 Recovery console. This can be accessed by booting to the Windows 2000 CD, or by hitting F8 at the boot prompt if the Recovery Console has been installed to the hard disk. Instructions for installing the Recovery Console to the hard disk will be provided at the end of this document.

Boot to the Windows 2000 Recovery Console. Provide the administrator password when prompted.

Change directory to c:\winnt\system32. Two files in this directory need to be manipulated: VLSP.DLL and VNSP.DLL. Rename both of these files, and reboot.

Windows will now log in and load the desktop properly, however TCP/IP networking will be broken until either the TCP/IP driver is uninstalled and reinstalled, or a new version of SmartPass is installed.

SUPPLEMENTAL

To install the Windows 2000 Recovery Console to hard disk:

The installation must be performed while logged in as an Administrator. Insert the Windows 2000 installation CD. Open a command prompt and navigate to the \I386 directory. Type winnt32 /cmdcons to install the Recovery Console to hard disk. It will now appear as an option on the Windows 2000 boot menu, accessible by hitting F8 at the boot prompt.
