SmartGate Technical Notes

Tech Note: 003

SmartGate & Windows 2000/ME:
An explanation and suggested resolution.

Applies to: SmartGate, Release 4.1.1 and under, ONLY.
Last updated: July 26th, 2000.
SUMMARY

SmartPass 4.1.2 has Winsock2 support for Windows 2000/ME, without IPSEC or the ability to DriveMap. If possible it is recommended to use this version.

SmartPass 4.1 does not require a SmartGate upgrade at the same time. In the meantime, there is a workaround for Win2000/WinME and SmartPass 4.1.1 and earlier

Note: This workaround is not supported by Customer Care, QA, or Engineering. It must be followed step-by-step or it will not work. Also note that every time you apply a Winsock patch, or re-install SmartPass, you will need to follow the procedure again.

Note: Outlook Express 2000 also installs the Winsock 2.

Configuring Windows 2000/ME & SmartPass 4.1.1:

1) Copy the V-One "wsock32.dll" to the "C:\" directory (if you do not have a copy, you can download it from here for version 4.0 or earlier, and from here for version 4.1.)

2) Install SmartPass.

3) Reboot machine after installation.

4) Before machine boots, press F8 to go into Windows2000 "Safe Mode - Command Line" (first selection) This solution will only work from command line safe mode, with Windows 2000/ME file protection turned off. If your WindowsME is not an upgrade, you may need to boot from a Windows98 floppy disk.

5) Type the following at the Command Prompt:

For Windows 2000:

cd \winnt\system32

ren wsock32.dll wsockx.dll

copy c:\wsock32.dll

For Windows ME:

cd \windows\system32

ren wsock32.dll wsockx.dll

copy c:\wsock32.dll

6) Reboot the machine

Note: On Windows 2000/NT systems the SmartPass Client will often give the error, 'Unable to listen on port 135' when trying to communicate with a Exchange server. In the TCP access permission for your Exchange server, change the client port to match the server port of 2023, and leave the destination port as 135.
