SmartGate® Technology Description

SmartGate protects your environment by allowing secure access from an end user's device to TCP/IP-based applications and other resources through the public Internet or any IP network. SmartGate provides a framework for strong two-factor user authentication, 256-bit AES data encryption, fine-grained access control, event logging, and self-provisioning online registration for user enrollment and token distribution. Advanced capabilities allow separation of encryption and authentication servers, federated identity across autonomous domains and single sign-on to multiple resources. Web based administration can be centralized or distributed and offers simple, powerful grouping capabilities.

End user access is through a clientless Java agent or via an intelligent client available on a broad range of devices including Windows, Macintosh and Pocket PC that does not require use of a browser. Endpoint security protection can be configured for compliance-based policy enforcement and interoperates with third party applications. SmartGate comes packaged with a FIPS 140-2 validated software token that can be stored on a variety of physical token storage devices. It also supports a range of third-party authentication systems, including X.509 PKI, LDAP, RSA SecurID, RADIUS, Entrust and digital certificates from numerous providers. Since SmartGate operates at the application layer and is built on SSL VPN technology, it is unaffected by NAT configurations, can traverse open firewall ports, and is unaffected by other obstacles commonly encountered in networked environments.

SmartGate is network agnostic and works over any IP-based networking infrastructure. The software is engineered to overcome delays associated with satellite connections, allowing virtually the same as "in-the-clear" performance. SmartGate supports the mobile workforce by securing PDAs and wireless LANs.

AEP SmartGate provides government grade security for Secure But Classified (SBU) environments. All cryptographic modules of the SmartGate server (not just subcomponents) are FIPS 140-2 validated by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

SmartGate is available on Windows, Solaris, Linux, and Windows platforms and can easily scale to support tens of thousands of end users. It can operate in a standalone mode or be integrated with other AEP Networks infrastructure security products.
