GERMANTOWN, Md., Oct 17, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- As the result of
the recent interface of the FBI's Law Enforcement Online (LEO) and
the federally funded Regional Information Sharing System (RISS) information
sharing networks, V-ONE Corporation (Nasdaq:VONE), a leading provider
of VPN security products, announced today that V-ONE will be providing
additional SmartGate(R) VPN software for the newly combined networks. LEO will join the RISS network as a new Federal center. Over 43,000 members are expected to utilize the new expanded information sharing network. "By uniting these vital networks, critical and timely information can better be shared with law enforcement and intelligence agencies throughout the world," said Craig Sorum, Unit Chief and Supervisory Special Agent of LEO. "Because both LEO and RISS had separately chosen the V-ONE VPN technology to secure their networks, the interface and virtual integration of the two is very practical and efficient. Added value is that current users of either network are already familiar with V-ONE's SmartPass(R) client software so there is no learning curve or delay in getting these users operational." In a speech given on October 8, 2002, to law enforcement officials attending the International Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Minneapolis, Robert Mueller, Director of the FBI commented "We are working to create a system using LEO, NLets, and RISSNET that will get alerts (to you) before you hear the story on CNN--not some of the time, but all of the time. But, that's a tall order. It is something I am committed to. Still, we need more. We need to build more and better and bigger bridges." Mr. Mueller also remarked "In June, Bill Berger (President of IACP) testified before the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs. He noted that while local law enforcement agencies are often the first responders to a terrorist attack, their role is significantly broader. Bill stated that, and I quote, 'these agencies can and must play a vital role in the investigation and prevention of future terrorist attacks.' Bill told the Senate that 16,000 state and local law enforcement agencies employ more than 700,000 officers, and that these officers are the eyes and ears of the communities. That makes all of you a critical source of information and intelligence in the war on terrorism. Bridges carry traffic in two directions, not one, and we appreciate that fact now more than ever before." "We are very pleased to have played such an important role in the efficient and effective union of these essential information sharing networks," stated Margaret Grayson, president and CEO of V-ONE Corporation. "The critical service provided by this union is seen by our government customers as paramount to our Homeland security, and V-ONE is proud to be a part of the total solution." LEO is a criminal justice/public safety extranet, currently serving the law enforcement community as well as other federal, state and local law enforcement and emergency management agencies. Its unique value is its ability to deliver secure communications services, topical information and distance learning to local, state, and federal law enforcement on an any time, any-place basis. The LEO system has become a critical tool in equipping officers with the ability to securely share information that provides an enhanced capability to investigate crimes that involve a coordinated effort across United States law enforcement operations, such as violent crime, money laundering, organized crime, counter-terrorism, and most recently Homeland Security initiatives. The RISS program was established in 1974. Funded through a grant from the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance, the program enhances the ability of local, state and federal law enforcement member agencies to identify, target and remove criminal conspirators. RISS supports investigative and prosecution efforts involving narcotics trafficking, criminal gangs, and organized and violent crime across multi-jurisdictional boundaries. RISS serves over 6,000 member law enforcement agencies in 50 states, two Canadian provinces, the District of Columbia, Australia, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, England, and Puerto Rico.
